21 Harrowing Times Someone Thought ‘Yeah, I’m About to Die’

It may not feel like it, but we do incredibly dangerous things every day. Driving a kill you without warning. Usually, you won’t see it coming, but that makes it all the scarier when you think you might be doing so.

For one Redditor, it was during their first dive as a certified scuba diver. “Long story short, at 105 meters, I noticed I was nearly out of air,” they told r/AskReddit. “The needle was in the red zone. My dive buddy wouldn’t go up with me, so after arguing with him in hand signals, I finally started up when the needle was halfway through the red. I ran out of air at 85 meters, probably the (scariest) moment of my life.”

Fortunately, “I was about to drop my belt and do an emergency ascent when I noticed another diver,” they continued. “I swam over to him, gave him the ‘out of air’ signal, and grabbed his octopus at the same time.”

They then asked, “Have you ever thought to yourself, ‘This is it, I am going to die’?” and plenty of ultimately death-defying answers followed.

trekbette 13y ago Mine is silly. Watching Horrible Bosses, during the cocaine scene, I was laughing so hard I could not breathe, and I couldn't stop. I thinking I can't breathe. I'm going to die, but I'll die laughing.
. 13y ago Yeah, I was skydiving and my parachute wouldn't open no matter how hard I tugged at it. Somehow I got it to open, but let me tell you it's not a good feeling...
leadfoot323 . 13y ago Went to Peru. Caught dysentery. Curled up in bed with a fever of 103.7 F, I think to myself, This is how I die: curled up in a bed in a hostel in a second-world country.
sierra420 . 13y ago I was in a car crash where I got t-boned. Nailed right in the driver side door. I lost a lot of blood from a fairly serious head wound and I distinctly sitting there thinking this is it, people die like this every day.
xcr4l 13y ago When I was younger my friends and I would mess around on a construction site when nobody was around. There was some fine- grained sand there and one day when it was pouring rain and it kind of turned into some quicksand shit. I being waist deep and completely losing my shit thinking I was gunna die.
Bootstrap_Paradox . 13y ago . Edited 13y ago I was pushing out an old window to replace at my moms and the right side frame came loose. When this happened my right hand went through the glass and cut my wrist. I seriously thought I was going to bleed to death. Also when people see the scars I get an awkward look, I guess it looks like I tried to commit suicide.
llamas1355 . 13y ago There was major flooding in my home town and a chiropractor was offering free adjustments in a park to volunteers who were helping clean up. I stepped up took my turn and he immediately twisted my head to the side and cracked every vertebrae in my neck. Before he had time to twist my head in the other direction I accepted that there was a possibility that he was going to snap my neck and I was going to die.
eaz135 . 13y ago . Edited 13y ago enger in a speeding car. The road was terrible and we went over a bump which made the car go airborn for a very brief moment towards oncoming traffic. Our car ended up in the oncoming traffic lane with a car heading our way a handful of yards away. The car regained traction and the driver snapped back into our lane just before collision. I felt like my heart totally stopped beating as I was watching the oncoming car come towards us. Nobody in the car spoke for the next 10 minutes.
majormisfit3336 13y ago Ive told this story a hundred times but anytime a bad drug deal had a gun involved I thought that was it. One really sticks out in my mind though, this crazy woman with more power in the drug trade than i could begin to understand at that age put a gun in my face after i pissed her off and asked you wanna die first? in that pants shittingly scary moment I responded with if you shoot me here you'll have to carry my fat ass out of here AND get a new couch She laughed
. 13y ago I was white water rafting, and our instructor wanted to take us to what they called Hollywood Hole. Basically the water created suction and could possibly get us vertical, he talked it up like it was awesome but NO ONE in our raft wanted to do it, especially with the high water levels. Well, we did it. Half of us went overboard, myself included. I had a life jacket, but wound up underneath the raft. I tried to surface, but I couldn't figure out which way to go and the current was taking me the same
13y ago My appendix burst a few years ago, it was like being slashed across the stomach over and over again with a dull, serrated knife, no let-up, no acclimatisation, a private bar where they only serve hurt. On a logical level I knew that, severe as it was, they can fix that and stop the rest of your guts from getting infected; being there, I felt I was going to die - sometimes you reach a point where nothing should hurt that much and still leave you alive. I've been stabbed, punched, fallen through plateglass, and started to drown,
13y ago I was hit by a drunk driver the summer before last. I was driving home, about 5 miles under the speed limit on a 45 mph road when a drunk driver came around a curve on the wrong side of the road. I seeing the car r - - almost in slow motion - - and realizing it was going to hit me and having time to make a decision about what I was going to do. I could swerve onto the wrong side the road and risk hitting someone else, swerve off to the side and likely hit a tree, or
AndyT_T 13y ago Gymnast here! The first time I went for a full-in (a backflip where you spin once and flip twice) I bocked it (its where you start the flip and then freak out and open up and flail). Basically, when I opened up I had no idea where I was in the air. I had started twisting and rotating and I just lost all equilibrium. If you had pause life I wouldn't have been able to guess where the floor was if you paid me. Every time something like that happens (it happens a lot when you're learning
lowmigx3 . 13y ago Edited 13y ago Once I was scaling a mountain with my cousins where we decided to embark climbing a treacherous overhang. At the time, I had a very ambitious mindset and thought I could do it - plus combined with my cousins' egging-me on, I did not want to disappoint. In a quick swoop, I jumped and got a hold of the protruding rock. The sweat from my palms created a slick oily grime that did not help me stabilize my grip. I fervently started to move my feet in an effort to gain traction since behind me
13y ago I was learning to fly. I was practicing slow fight at 3000ft. You are supposed to fly the airplane at a speed just above a stall. Keep the horn beeping, then recover. I was alone and a newbie. I had done the stall recovery a few times with the instructor just fine. I was now all by myself. I stalled the airplane with a little throttle still on and it started a spin. I freaked. Didn't recover until 1100 feet. I knew I was going to die that morning at one point, and accepted the fact.In moments
TyJaWo 13y ago Myself and two friends were driving home at like 4:45 in the morning in a pickup truck, and we each had to get home by 5:00, so we were flying. One friend driving, one in the middle and me hanging out the window like a jackass, holding onto what I call the oh shit handle on the inside ceiling. We were going too fast to turn when we came to a fork in the road and ended up swerving like crazy, which would have pitched me out the window, had I not grabbed the inside of the
13y ago I was driving down a back road coming home from a really late night at a friends house (no alcohol). I avoided hitting a dear that jumped out of the woods and lost control of my car. My car flipped 5x and i ended up unconcious and in a ditch. I don't know how to explain that feeling to people but i was incredibly calm. I really thought to myself ok well... this is it as my windshiled spider webbed and everything went black. I woke up at about 330am in a ditch while my car was
justplainmark 13y ago Yeah, when I was living in Seattle, I bike commuted to Queen Anne from the Central District every day for work. I'd just gotten a crappy used bike from CraigsList (I was dirt poor) and was riding it down Denny (HUGE ass hill) in the rain when my brakes wouldn't take. So here I am, going like 25 MPH down one of the steepest hills in Seattle towards a red light that has intense cross traffic. And all I could think was Wow, this is how they'll tell my mother it happened. But I Flintstoned stopped to
mr_darwins_tortoise a 13y ago One night I drove to a friend's apartment at night. I parked my car a bit far away and was walking to the stairs when I saw about ten guys come out and surround me. One of them asked me a question, something about directions, and while I answered another punched me in the back of the head and knocked me over. They kicked me for awhile and went through my pockets. I was sure they would kick me to death, or stab me when they were done robbing me. After they got my wallet, though,
13y ago I was driving to get lunch in the middle of the workday. I work in an area that has a lot of manufacturing plants, so there are train tracks everywhere. Most of the intersections are not fancy with lights and guardrails and so forth. Usually I'm observant, but I was distracted this day by my own thoughts. The truck in front of me barreled over the tracks no problem, and in my absent-minded state this signalled to my brain that it was ok to cross. I saw a flicker of motion out of the corner of my
